The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is reviewing an officer-involved use-of-force incident that occurred Saturday afternoon in Smyrna, Tennessee.
According to authorities, Smyrna Police Department officers responded to a call in the 200 block of North Lowry Street regarding a reported domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, 59-year-old Christopher Jones reportedly fled the scene.
Officials say the situation escalated during the encounter. The TBI stated that Jones was armed and allegedly advanced toward an officer in what was described as a threatening manner. At that point, officers deployed a less-lethal round in an effort to mitigate what they perceived as an immediate threat.
The device struck Jones, bringing the confrontation under control. He was taken into custody, and the incident was subsequently turned over to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for an independent review, as is standard procedure in officer-involved use-of-force cases.
The TBI has not released additional details regarding Jones’ condition or the specific circumstances that led to the escalation, noting that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
Authorities have also not confirmed what type of less-lethal weapon was used during the incident. Further information is expected to be released as investigators continue to gather statements, review evidence, and reconstruct the events leading up to the confrontation.
The Smyrna Police Department has stated it is cooperating fully with the TBI’s investigation.
