A serious five-vehicle crash on the Monash Freeway in Dandenong North has left multiple people injured and caused major traffic disruptions across Melbourne’s southeast.
The collision occurred just after 2pm on Sunday on the outbound lanes near the Stud Road off-ramp. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, where five vehicles were involved in the pile-up.
Among those injured, a woman and a 12-year-old boy travelling in a Mazda 3 sustained critical injuries and were rushed to hospital for urgent treatment. Another child in the same vehicle was also taken to hospital, though their injuries were reported to be minor.
In a separate vehicle, a blue Mitsubishi carrying four occupants, three individuals were transported to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Authorities confirmed that the occupants of the other vehicles involved—a BMW, a Volkswagen Tiguan, and a white Mitsubishi—escaped without injury.
Police spoke with the driver of the BMW, identified as a 34-year-old man, as part of their initial investigation. He was later released, and inquiries into the exact cause of the crash remain ongoing.
The incident led to significant traffic congestion along the freeway, with delays stretching for several kilometres as emergency crews worked to clear the scene and assist those involved. Motorists were urged to avoid the area or seek alternative routes during the response.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and are appealing for any witnesses or dashcam footage that may assist in determining how the collision occurred.
