It is with deep sadness that Elizabeth Rugby Union Football Club announces the passing of one of its most dedicated and respected members, Frans De Vries. His loss is profoundly felt by all who have been part of the club community.
Frans’ association with the club spanned nearly six decades, having first joined at the age of 18 in 1968. Over the years, he became a cornerstone of the club’s identity, embodying commitment, passion, and sportsmanship. A talented Second Row forward, he began playing A Grade in 1970 during a strong era for the club, which proudly fielded four competitive grades. Throughout his playing career, Frans made an extraordinary contribution, appearing in close to 400 matches and continuing to compete well into his late 30s.
His love for the game extended beyond his prime playing years. In 1998, Frans was a proud member of the club’s Golden Oldies team and went on to represent the club at the World Golden Oldies Tournament in Adelaide in 1999—an experience he held close to his heart.
More than his achievements on the field, Frans will be remembered for the person he was—welcoming, generous, and deeply loyal to his club and teammates. He formed lasting friendships and was admired by generations of players who followed in his footsteps. His presence at Womma Park was a constant, and his absence will be deeply felt.
Frans was excited about the club’s future and the move to a new location, a reflection of his enduring connection and belief in the club’s growth.
While we mourn his passing, we take comfort in imagining him reunited with past teammates, continuing the game he loved. Frans De Vries will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.
