It is with great sadness that we share the passing of former Simpson University President, Dr. James M. Grant, who died this morning at the age of 84. Affectionately known as “Jim,” he served as the 12th president and the second-longest serving leader in the 105-year history of Simpson University. His leadership, humility, and wisdom left a lasting impact on the institution and all who knew him.
Dr. Grant will be remembered for his vibrant personality, sharp sense of humor, and steadfast leadership, which guided the university through a period of remarkable growth and transformation. Under his direction, Simpson achieved university status, enrollment surpassed 1,000 students, and the Owen Student Services Center was completed—milestones that continue to shape the campus today.
A Christ-centered visionary, Dr. Grant led with conviction, faith, and a tireless spirit. His dedication to education and ministry helped build a strong foundation upon which the university continues to grow and thrive. His influence extended far beyond administrative achievements, as he inspired students, faculty, and staff with his commitment to purpose and service.
While his passing brings deep sorrow, his legacy remains a source of strength and inspiration. Those who knew him find comfort in the enduring impact of his work and the values he instilled.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Hazel, and his sons, Tobin, Matthew, and Jonathan, during this difficult time. May they find peace and comfort in cherished memories and in the knowledge that his life touched so many in meaningful and lasting ways.
