It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mel Cooper, who died on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the age of 85. A visionary leader and steadfast pillar of the McCallie community, Mel dedicated 25 years of service as Director of Development, helping to shape the school’s future in lasting and meaningful ways.
Working closely with former Head of School Spencer McCallie III, Mel played an instrumental role in guiding McCallie into the modern era. His leadership, insight, and tireless commitment helped strengthen the school’s foundation and expand its reach, leaving a legacy that will continue to benefit generations of students.
Mel was widely admired not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his character, integrity, and unwavering dedication to the school’s mission. He inspired those around him through both his actions and his values. As one alumnus reflected, “Our school is where it is today because of your leadership, your vision, and your character.”
Beyond his contributions to McCallie, Mel was a devoted husband, father, and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife, Eleanor, and their two daughters, Katie Cooper and Mae McCallie Cooper, who carry forward his legacy of kindness, strength, and service.
The McCallie community and all whose lives were touched by Mel are invited to honor and celebrate his life. A memorial service will be held on April 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the McCallie Chapel, followed by a reception in Alumni Hall on the McCallie campus.
Though Mel will be deeply missed, his enduring impact on the Ridge and the lives of so many will never be forgotten.
